Please be prepared for indoor or outdoor activities.  I will do my best to let you know in advance if  you will need outdoor clothing.  If you do not come with appropriate clothing, your grade will be impacted and it may be possible you will not be allowed to participate in that class.  Coming prepared for class accounts for a portion of your effort grade.

Five minutes will be allowed at the beginning and end of each class period for you to change and get ready for class as needed.  If you wear the proper activity attired to school, there is no need for you to change into different clothes for class.

Grading Policies

You are the one who determines your grade.  Though I track you on a daily  class basis, you will have the opportunity at the end of each unit to grade yourself through a self-assessment rubric.  Pieces of this self-assessment include participation, effort, changing for class and written work.  Some units will have class work sheets, writing proficiencies as well as written quizzes. There will be several methods of assessing your work in physical education class.  Some of these include an opportunity for you to self-assess, skills tests, written quizzes, teacher evaluations, class presentations and group work.   Each unit will also have specific learning targets / standards that are required and you are expected to meet to earn a grade of proficiency.  You will be able to track your progress throughout the year through the Infinite Campus grading system.

For each unit your grade  reflects your work in meeting the required learning targets / standards for that specific unit.  These learning targets are posted in the gym,  accessible via of my web page and reviewed at the beginning of each new unit.  The classes usually average 4 units per trimester so by the end of the year you will have been through approximately 12 units.

Grading is on a 1-4 rubric.  4= Exceeds ; 3= proficient; 2= progressing and 1 = not progressing

Some of the units to be covered this year in PE class include:

Fitness testing                       Mat Ball                                  Soccer             Flag Football

5 Minute Whiffleball                        Cross Country Skiing                        Capture the Flag       Ultimate Frisbee

Since standards based learning is new to all of us, we are learning this together.  Please be patient as I work through the curriculum pieces.  If you do have questions, please also feel free to contact me at jmerrill@rsu14.org.  You can access my webpage by going to RSU 14 Windham/Raymond Home page, click on schools; click on JSMS; click on Parent Page; click on Staff; click on jmerrill and you should be at my webpage.

I am looking forward to a great year together.

Sincerely,

Ms Joni M. Merrill
