5th - 8th Grades Physical Education Handbook

Jordan Small Middle School

Ms. Joni Merrill (jmerrill@rsul4.org)

Dear Student & Family,

Welcome to PE class. I hope this will be an exciting and active time of your day. I hope you will learn new activities, make new friends, and learn that being a healthy person requires physical activity and proper nutrition. This handbook is designed to provide you and your parents/family with the general guidelines of the class, equipment usage, being prepared for class, grading policies and examples of activities offered in the class. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask. It is important that you know how the program works because it affects you directly, so please take the time to go over this handbook.

General Guidelines:

The following guidelines have been established for all physical education classes at JSMS. Safety, respect for others and ideal learning conditions are a few reasons for these rules. If these rules are not followed, appropriate consequences will result.

1. Courtesy towards others is expected at all times.

2. You are expected to follow the directions of the teacher at all times

3. You are expected to participate in class in a safe manner without having the intent to harm anyone during the activity and throughout the class period.

4. You are expected to come to class ready to participate (wearing me appropriate clothes) every day. If you have a medical issue that will not allow you to participate for an extended period of time (more than 2 classes), it is important that you get a written doctor's note. If you do not feel well or have been sick, a note from a parent/or guardian is expected for you to be excused from class.

5. You may not leave the gymnasium for any reason without the teacher's permission.

6. No food or drink is allowed in the gymnasium at any time. You are encouraged to bring bottled water (plastic containers only - with your name on the bottle). This bottled water can be left in the hallway for you as you need it.

Equipment Usage:

The equipment used for physical education class is to be used in a proper manner at all times. Keeping the equipment in safe and usable condition will benefit you and your classmates. "Horse play" and "fooling around" with the equipment is not allowed. When inside the gym, balls are not to be kicked at any time unless it is within the context of a teacher supervised game. You are not to go into the equipment room without permission.

Being Prepared for Class:

Physical education classes involve a great deal of active movement and for this reason, you are expected to come to class in clothing that is appropriate for physical activity. These clothes should be clean, comfortable and appropriate for the class.

Appropriate clothing for PE class include:

*non-marking sneakers (they do not leave scuff marks on floor)

*Sneakers are to be appropriately tied at all times so they stay on your feet and also protect your feet

*shorts (no "short" shorts - tips of fingers should not extend further than end of shorts) and there should be no writing on the back of the shorts/pants (No Skorts)

*wind pants or sweatpants are fine as long as there is no writing on the seat;

*short or long-sleeved styled T-shirt or sweatshirt: shirts need to be long enough that when arms are lifted your belly and/or your back does not show. Shirts need to be high enough in the neck line to ensure modesty at all times. Any writing on the shirts must be appropriate for the school environment or you will be asked to change the shirt, cover it up, turn it inside out or not be allowed to participate.

*Tank tops and "muscle" shirts are not allowed in class
